Have you ever been to a Tex Mex restaurant called Casa Bonita? It's more like a kid's wonderland with an enchilada or two thrown in. We used to go there when I was little, but I always thought it was just a Southern anomaly or something and they shut that one down years ago. I have some fam in town and they mentioned that there's one here in Denver, off Colfax street. I was like, where off Colfax? That's the longest street in the world.
Sure enough - we went last night. It's enormous. Just like I remembered it, although more tropical and less circus-like than the one we used to go to.
If you have one in your area, I highly recommend taking the kids. Or getting a roudy and fun-loving group of friends together and stuffing your faces. They have an arcade, lots of tucked away corners with puppets, stuffed animals, toys and interesting sites to see. Staff members walk around selling light sticks and toys, much like at a carnival or a sports game. This one had a large waterfall and about every 15 minutes, various staff members would entertain the crowd by doing crazy dives into the water, pushing each other off, and doing some funny skits.
It's a bit of a process to actually make your way inside. Hence the Disneyland comparison. You enter the building and get in line to make your food order. The menu is limited and it's not the best food in the world, but it is made to order, so it is guaranteed to be both fresh and hot for you. Like the Salvatore Brothers. Ha! Sorry. I just can't help myself sometimes. (Meanwhile G is whipping out those divorce papers.)
Once you go through the line to order and get your food, you enter another line to get your drink (there are some alcoholic choices as well) and then a hostess will seat you. There's not a bad seat in the house. There are flags on the table that you raise whenever you need service, which was very prompt and friendly for us last night. Kids were running around everywhere, exploring caves behind the waterfall.
The inside was large enough, and architected (is that a word?) in such a way that it actually felt like being on a Mexican street. Or, at least a Disney-ish version of a Mexican street. (The company is not owned by Disney that I know of, it just gives off that vibe.)
I told my brother I'm taking him to the sports store equivalent of Casa Bonita today: REI!
