Back home now after a whirlwind trip to VA.
First things first:
As soon as we walked in the door the first night, I high-tailed it downstairs and scooped her up for a love fest. We were inseparable most of the weekend and I really wanted to take her to the holiday party but thought better of it at the last minute. Only four more days until she comes to live here permanently!
Other than a few work events thrown in, it was life as usual. I read (book review coming tomorrow), napped, man-handled the bun bun, and G nerded it up.
While we were out and about on Saturday, trying to find a canvas pet carrier to take Orca in on the plane this next weekend, he "needed" to pick up "a few things" at a local nerd store. It looks like a green blanket but it's really a table mat. Like a table cloth for nerd games.
Our work holiday party was at the Air and Space Museum. It was held at night and we had the place all to ourselves, complete with docents to tell us about the planes and such. It was kind of magical to be there at night; only the planes and spacecraft were lit up and they were all different colors. As much as I don't miss living in VA - and this trip confirmed that I really, really don't - this was a spectacular experience.
We got to see the Discovery up close. It looks as though they did not clean it up much before presenting it in the museum, and so we are able to see all the heat streaks from the atmosphere, and all the wear and tear from multiple trips to space.
It is obviously comprised of several different types of material. The entire underside is a mosaic of the infamous heat tiles we heard about, due to the Columbia tragedy. The top "white" part looks like quilted fabric up close, as if it is patch-worked together.
This is probably the best picture to see all the heat marks on the tiles.
It was a good weekend (great flights!) full of some quality time with this one and the bun bun. Now only a few days of work between me and some holidays!
