An All-American Saturday

It just doesn't get any more American than yesterday:  We went to the Veteran's Day Parade in Denver, then repainted the kitchen with SEC football blasting in the background.  Welcome to U.S.A Cultural Studies 101.

G heard that the Veteran's Day Parade - despite being large and fairly elaborate - received a poor turnout last year.  We just can't have that.  We found a spot at the corner of Broadway and 17th and camped out.  The lighting wasn't the best but corners are great because parades back up and you can see the floats and people for longer, as they wait to turn.  <--- You're welcome for that excellent grammar and sentence structure.

Get this - some of the WWII vets actually leaned out of their vehicles and thanked us for turning out to watch them.  What?  They risked their lives.  I think we can eat candy and watch a parade.

Some observations:

There were veterans spread out in the parade representing WWII (!), Vietnam, and the more recent Operation You-Fill-In-The-Blank-With-All-The-Middle-East-Stuff.

There were different groups of cars that spread for blocks.  The Model A Fords were our favorite - I mean, look how "American" that is! - but they also had corvettes, PT Cruisers, and motorcycles.

This is just one picture among many, but the ladies are representing in JROTC these days.  From my observations - overall - yesterday, it easily looks like 50/50 girls/guys.  It's a new day.  I don't know if this is something more unique to CO, and I'm not trying to make any kind of feminist statement here, but it was just very clear that girls, for whatever reason, are motivated to serve.

I thought this float was striking.

Look at the shawl below.  Is our military getting more diverse, or what?

And, to switch gears entirely, here's a little Before & After of our bland kitchen wall:

Not bad, huh?  A little color goes a long way.  This is "Moroccan Red."  Now that I've almost survived the semester, it's time to do some home reno.
