The Down Turn

This is what the last 24 hours have looked like for me. A bad sinus infection set in yesterday and escalated overnight. No sleep. Which is great for reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, by the way. Do you know that Harriet Beecher Stowe was paid by the word for that book? Yeah, it shows. I just aged 100 years, but hey!, after reading all night and day, I finished it.

I'm completely miserable but I'm trying to look on the bright side. (1) At least this happened over the long weekend so I could just lay around instead of teaching/talking/consulting all the time, and (2) Although I'm in a lot of pain, I'm "glad" the infection has escalated as quickly as it has. It came on hard and after about 30 hours has already started to diminish. I'm sure the effects will linger for about a week, but I'm ready for the linger stage. As long as it means the throat-on-fire-night-sweats-deaf-in-both-ears-hacking-up-both-lungs-unable-to-sleep-unable-to-breathe stage is over.

I hate that I was sick over my only holiday though. It's gonna be a long fall, people. Here's to another week and another presentation. And two papers. Slowly but surely I'm making academic progress.

I've found that managing human-goose conflicts is essential.
